Brass weights are suitable for lake flies, streamers and flies where a rapid sink rate is not required; on the contrary, only a slight weight at the front is needed. In running water, they are less effective at getting the rig to the bottom, but they do allow the fly on the hook to move more naturally. Experienced fly fishers therefore avoid overloading their flies unnecessarily and try to use brass weights instead of the more expensive tungsten beads.
